I think it would be a good idea to modify the ratings system so all categories don't have to be answered. For example, some projects have no music, or no human actors... or no screenplay. What about a music video? Rating it for screenplay seems superfluous, and rating a documentary for acting is ridiculous.

Usually the reviewers compensate for this (I know I do). I think the main reason for the ratiing system is just to give a general feedback to the filmmakers and to allow us as viewers to be open to other opinions of the works. I've never felt there was really a competetive nature on this site (that's why I love it most), and I've never heard anyone draw reference to their ratings or reviews to put themselves above anyone else. I think you have a valid point, but the most important section of the review is the Comment window where the real feedback is provided.

Competition has nothing to do with it - I just don't think it's contributing anything to require a rating for every category.

If a film doesn't have a screenplay, I can either give it a medium rating for screenplay or a zero... It's not really an accurate reflection either way.

I agree with Evan. Why not just rate the movie overall, instead of say, giving it a 1 for soundtrack because it doesn't feature some pop music?

I'm planning on adding an N/A option in the future. It is definitely a good idea.
