If I want to submit a movie to a festival, people told me that the music is a concern. Like what do I need to do about that? Do I just need to reference the music in the credits? Or do I gotta like ask permission, or etc?
I dont know about festivals or how strict they are in terms of borrowed music. However, from a legal standpoint you can't use any "copywritten" music without obtaining permission from the artist or the company that owns it. So if you're using a song by U2 you'd have to get thier permission to use it legally. Same goes for something as small as a song you used from a local band (though it would be much easier to get their approval). Just crediting them wouldn't make it ok in the eyes of the law. You can however use public domain music, and open source music to your hearts content, though you do have to credit the artist on a lot of the open source stuff.
Most festivals have you sign a paper that says you own the rights or have the license for everything you show/hear in your movie, and that they are not legally responsible if you do not have those rights and use it anyway.
