am i the only one here?

no complaints if i am...but i'm just asking cuz i don't know of many aspiring female filmmakers. oddly enough...i've never been particularly inspired by female filmmakers! (though, i gotta hand it to sophia coppola, lost in translation kicked ass!)

last spring semester was my last semester at onondaga community college...i was an electronic media major/cinema studies minor. after i had completed my last final exam, my fave prof...a FEMALE documentary filmmaker(she teaches at the comm. college to pay the bills)..told me to keep in touch with her cuz she knows what it's like to be where i am right now and also, that not many of her students are wanting to be filmmakers. (we just did video and tv type stuff)

then...last summer...i took a trip to nyc and while i was there, i went and visited nyfa as i had been accepted there and i wanted to check the place out. the staff was really nice to me and even let me observe a class going on. i loved the amazing, creative group dynamic of this class...it reminded me of my avid class from the previous fall semester...i felt comfortable and like i was one of these people. thing i noticed about this class of 16 students...there was only one girl in the class!

well, i just wanted to ask if there were any women posting around these boards, that's all. though, i must confess...my love of film has more often than not impressed a guy or two. i was the only girl in my kubrick films class...that was rather interesting!

Well, I'm not a film student yet, but I hope I will be in the near future. I don't know why but it seems like most of the girls who are interested in film want to act or write.... It's pretty strange.... And I also have to confess that I'm more inspired by male directors, somehow most female filmmakers are making "female films", and I don't like that.... But you should check out Maya derens work, she's great (beware, she was an experimental filmmaker). Ok, just to tell you that you are not alone! ^_-

There don't seem to be a whole lot of females posting here, but I'd say about 1/2 the film students at UC San Diego were female when I was there. I would assume most film programs would be similar.

sadly, the female population the in NYU film programm seems to be rather small. I would say 2/3 guys, 1/3 girls. But all the luck for you.

I am a female film student. I am in high school, but I take a film course at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. In the class I would say that it is split close to 50/50 male/female. I am also guilty of being inspired by mostly male cinematographers/directors; however, Norah Ephron has been inspiration to me. The industry has been male dominated, but I believe that will change with our generation.

i'm a female high school student. yeah i've noticed that too, and not only does the film industry lack females, but it lacks many other groups as well, plus its chock full of stereo types for directors. But that said, my love of film is strong enough to put all the stereotypes aside. I'm inspired by many male directors too, but i love sanaa hamri.

When I went to film school at Boston University 10 years ago about half were women too.

And I can say that working in the film industry now in Hollywood - there are alot of women too - but most that I know are producers, assistant directors, editors, etc... I do know one director personally who's a woman. But she does Music Videos.

I dunno - where I work as an editor, all of the staff editors except one are men. BUT - the place is OWNED by a woman.

I would say about 1/3 of the film students here at Emerson are girls, which is still more than I was expecting. It was about 50/50 at NYFA back in 2003.

I´m finishing the career of Film Director, here in ARgentina, and the half of the class are womens, but it´s true that here too, the film industry is own by mans and the womans are just art directors or productions, but i know many friends(womens)that wants to be a professional filmmaker as i want.....in my case i´m inspired by male directors, because all them, have made good works for me.But come on womens!Is our oportunity to be there!

I'm a girl who will soon be a film student, where I don't know. But, in my class very few people are actually taking moviemaking seriously so I can't really talk about proportions in the industry.

But with other events I've gone to meeting/film festivals the majority of the directors were guys. On the other hand I'm happy when I meet anyone is trying to pursue this career.

At my school the dynamics are pretty sexist. What I've noticed is that women get involved in Producing, Writing, and Production Design whereas men get involved in Directing and Cinematography. This is probably due to the sexism that exists on sets.

I'm surprised. There aren't a whole lot of girls in film at NYU (36.69% female according to a quick facebook search or three and some simple calculations) but I don't see any gender bias in terms of who does what. I mean, sure guys boom op more cause it involves being tall and really strong, and girls do costume design and art direction more cause guys are less inclined to, but I see girls distributed among film roles pretty evenly. Directing, writing, DPing, gaffing, etc. There are just less of them.

grad film at NYU is definitely 50/50.

In fact, I think the incoming 1st year students has a majority of females.

i am a chick and going for directing. I am so not impressed with sophia she is just a lucky girl who's daddy has a lot of talent. Did you see marie antoinette horrible art direction was good though

I'm only in high school but my goal is to make it to film school...But yeah I've also noticed the major lack of female directors...All the best movies have seem to been made by guys...but that can be changed.

I dont know if this is relevant but i went to a private academy in Melbourne, studying dig film and it was about a 50/50 split. The thing I noticed though was the majority of the females seemed to head in the producer/pre production roles rather than fight for directing roles. I must say though that the best 'editor' (not compositors...) and the best producer was a female. Unless it was a solo project, there were no female directors....but strangely there were no arguments, not even discussions about this fact.

Ohhh, one more point...one of my classmates has started going to producer meetings in melbourne (discussing the film industry these days) and he mentioned last week that the majority of the producers there were female.

Please don't take this post as my personal opinion (i think the best person should have the job, what ever the job, whether they be male or female). These are just observation I have noticed from my own experiences.

I'm a female film student! Well...soon-to-be film student, hopefully. I'm a senior and i've applied to a bunch of different film schools all over, just waiting to hear back from em! But yeah, there really are barely any female filmmakers. I went to the NYFA filmmaking program last summer and for some odd reason, i was expecting it to be only girls...i still dont know why I thought that, because when I got there, there were only 4 girls there for filmmaking...the other 25 were all guys, lol. It was actually quite a pleasant suprise, haha.

Not being a woman I wouldn't know but are there a lot of females out there who want to be director but can't due sexism or discomposure?
