I heard that the University of Texas in Austin has a really good undergraduate film program. Is this true? What are it's pros and cons? Has anybody attended the film school? Any help would be great! Thanks.

It's definitely one of the top film schools in the country. Austin is a great town for filmmakers and is a refreshing break from the New York / Los Angeles standard. I've heard great things about it and I'm sure you'd get a great education there.

It all depends on how much filmmaking you want to be doing in comparison with your other activities and classes. UT most likely will give you the most well rounded education, while Emerson and Chapman are noted almost completely for their film programs. That's not to say they don't offer decent programs in other subjects, but their name comes from their film classes, while UT is known all around.

Well I go to Emerson and I love it, so I'd say that should be your top choice. UT and Chapman are tied for second, in my book.

I'd put emerson above the other two, but I think comparing UT and Chapman is like apples and oranges. UT gives you that big state school vibe, in your hometown, lapp. Chapman is pretty small and film-centric. Might be nice to get out of Austin for a bit, wouldnt it? If you want to work in the industry, (I.E. you're not afraid of the imposing figure that is hollywood) then Southern California is the place to be, in my book. If you're in it for the freedom of indie filmmaking, Austin seems like a great place to be. It depends on what you want.

Actors? What actors?

You might want to consider the financial side of things too. If you live in Austin, then you'll receive in-state tuition over the $40,000 you would pay at Chapman or Emerson. The other posters are correct that UT will provide you with a more well rounded education in addition to the fantastic film program. In my opinion, a more rounded education is what an 18 yr old person needs. Plus, you can't beat Austin. Not only is it an emerging film center, but it's a great city to live in. This is my third semester at UT Austin, and I love it. HOOK 'EM!

Thank you very much for the advice. Is there anybody else who would like to add anything to this discussion?
