I have recently wanted to branch out and learn as much as I can about filmmaking before entering college (since my TV teacher isnt the most helpful person in the world). I also think that doing a film workshop or two will help in the application process.
I have been looking at NYFA, to go to next summer. It looks very good. Steven Speilbergs kid goes there. I mean it has to be good then, right? Next year i hope to attend the high school program (i think its for like 4 weeks).
The only thing is is that im not 100% sure if i should go through with it. It is for 4 weeks, and takes up a lot of summer training for my sport (cross-country). But i could care less about CC in a few years, while filmmaking is my life. And, if its not worth it, i can save my parents a lot of money.
Im so conflicted! Can someone help me out? As anyone heard (or actually been) to this place? What are your thoughts?

I just got back from the 4 week NYFA High school program at Universal Studios.
Yeah I definitely think it is worth it. It's a great program. And if you have never shot with film before it is a great place to start. Everybody at the camp is really focused on filmmaking and if you go to Universal studios you get to use their awesome back lot so you definitely get your moneys worth. I had a great time and I unquestionably left the camp a better filmmaker.
Hope this helps.

I see that you're from New Jersey. You should check out the School of Visual Arts's high school film program. I took that last fall. You go every Saturday to New York for like 3 months and it's really a killer class. It's taught by the school's film department head Sal Petrosino and he gives you pretty much what you learn in an introductory class at that college.
They basically use it as a recruitment method for new students. ie- you show up and show an interest in film, and they flaunt all the university's resources and whatnot and let you use them, which is why the tuition for that class is so low (the $200 you pay probably doesn't even cover the cost of the 16mm film that you'll be using). You really learn a lot. Look into that. Seriously.
This is the link for last year's session. I don't think they put up next year's schedule yet. But the important thing is that there is a phone number at that site. Call them and ask about it. Just be warned that, if you take this class, you're going to hear your teacher tell you things like, "In all honesty, i think this school is a better film school than NYU, and here's why..."
Like I said before, it's his job to try to recruit new students, so he says stuff like that. But you do learn a lot of real information.
I was at NYFA's 4-week camp at Universal this past summer. It was an amazing experience and I met awesome people, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Do it. It's really great.
