Hi everyone,
I've been lurking around the studentfilms.com forums for a while, this is my first post Smile.

I'm applying for a position in a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Film and Television) course at a major Australian university (QUT, Kelvin Grove or Griffiths, Queensland college of arts) and there's a few things in the application i would love some help with.

the application is as follows;
  • Academic record
  • Current passport size photograph
  • Resume / Filmography
  • Portfolio containing:
    - Written statement (200 words) in response to one of the following questions:
    EITHER
    Which films and/or filmmakers have
influenced your decision to apply for
    this and why?
    OR
What are your career ambitions and how
do you aim to fulfil them?
    - An original screenplay for a film,
television or new media production (five
    minutes duration only).

    This should demonstrate creative
    innovation in concept, performance,
    visual and sonic design

    - A Storyboard for a connected sequence
    from your five-minute script. This
    should comprise at least twelve
    postcard size drawings or photographs
    (10cm x 15cm) placed and numbered in
order. Images should be appropriate to
    the script and should communicate
    effectively.

There is a significant amount of competition for the positions in the course, and to my knowledge only the applicants that really stand out get accepted for an interview. I have some experience in all the areas of the application, but so do all the other applicants.

The questions i pose to all that have been through this is;
  • What do the selection panel look for in their applicants and how can i display it?
  • In your opinion, which written statement topic should i model my response on?
  • How can i make my script and storyboard stand out?
  • How important are the word limits?

I know this is a lengthy post but i would greatly appreciate it if you took a few minutes of your precious time to lend me a hand Cool

I'm sure many of you have been in my situation.

Follow any limits, etc.

A killer script is the first choice, followed by the ambition question.

They look for different things in different people. Determination, point of view, and life experiences matter in different ratios to academic aspects of your application...but all are factors.

Tell a solid story with a well-executed storyboard. Bam. You're solid. Flash and no story sucks.

Good luck.

thanks heaps for your advice,
i'm just starting to put it together now

i've only got 2 months so i'm using every spare moment to work on it, i'm also busy making the film i'm showing them if i get an interview. I could show them some older work but i don't think it's up to scratch.

Fingers crossed i get an interview.
