Just wondering what kind of experiences people have had with different screenwriting programs in California. I'm interested in attending UCLA, but would like to explore different options in case I don't get in.

Buy a bunch of Syd Field book? J/K but there are books out there that tell you alot of what the teachers will tell you. My favorite is Crafty Screenwriting by Alex Epstein and The Screenwriter's problem solver by Syd Field.

I agree Syd Field's Problem Solver book rocks the casbah. Robert McKee’s Story is also a great read. But what about the schools? I know I don't NEED to go to be a writer, but would like to experience college first hand. I'm specifically looking for information about colleges that don't start you out essentially as a freshman, like USC, even though you would have a junior status transferring in. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

sorry I'm answering my own posts, but I'm still looking for info on screenwriting experiences in california. I'm looking mostly to UCLA & Chapman. Does anyone have word on others in California. Besides USC and AFI.

When I was at Santa Monica College, I met a guy who had just sold a script about James Dean in his second year there. It was going to be a made-for-TV movie, but I don't know if it was ever produced (tho' he did get paid). Never met him again either.

They just finished releasing a movie not too long ago called James Dean. I've seen it at my local Cockbuster Video. That's probably the one.
