If you absolutely know nothing about it why not start trying to make your own little videos. I'm kinda on the same boat as you, but i've made a few videos containing my own written stories and I find the process of producing film is fun and rewarding at the end and through that experience i started to learn more like how actors act professionaly, how to edit clips to make them flow together, how to direct and i als learnt some Adobe premiere Pro, After Effects and Audition programs in which i had thought i'd never be bothered to learn!
I'm living in Australia and VCA (Victorian College of the Arts) is the closest and high quality Arts school I could take my Film course in, although like you i'm not sure if i should take the course as i heard you become a professional filmmaker without Film School.
I wish I could afford a course in Vancouver Film School they seem to have very high prestige, i've checked out their short films on Youtube, they're really good, (few are not good though)!
No helpfull electives? Photography is one yes. Also Phsycology, English, *DRAMA*, Multimedia and Media... if they have those.
Does your school have a drama teacher? they're more likey to have experience in the film industry, make a connection with him/her. i was inspired by my drama teacher to go in filming, not forgetting other inspirations like movies, and specific productions crews (check out WongFu productions
www.wongfuproductions.com).
ONE MORE THING! have your own company name! make sure it's simple and unique (maybe the name could describe your film tastes and styles).
hope i helped!
