WELL-in california- the Berkeley pre collegiate academy goes to 22 schools and has the teachers and administrators pic the top 5 students in the sophomore class(with grades- leadership-personality etc..) then those 5 write a few essays, fill out forms and turn in recommendation letters(liek applying to college). Then they pic the top two from each school, hold interviews and pic the final one. 22 students then go to berkeley for 6 weeks in the summer and take classes, go on trips, get career assesment and leadership retreats and stay in a dorm. We go up for ten more days the following summer(this past august) and work on our UC personal statments and have admission officers read them and give us advice. We pretty much have a GUARANTEED acceptance as long as we keep our grades up and we already have 28,000 dollars in scholarship. Usually when accepted, the scholars get a full ride, but the 28,000 is an initial amount. Its a lovely program(even though I dont want to go to berkeley).

there's no point on passing on a scholarship. No mater where you go the biggest part is what YOU make of it. If you have to end up spending a pile of cash to go to USC or NYU what's the point? You could have saved that money by taking the scholarship and then spending the money you would have on your own film projects.
