A must read for any filmmaker is Walter Murch's "In the Blink of an Eye." This book provides the oscar winnining editor's insight into editing. Hope that helps.

Even though it's not a book, there is a documentary called "The Cutting Edge: Magic of Movie Editing" that is really superb in explaining the art of editing. It interviews a bunch of famous filmmakers like Scorsese, Spielberg as well as famous editors like Walter Murch. I think it is available as a separate DVD as well as on the Bullitt 2 disc special edition. A must have editing documentary about the history and techniques of editing.

When all else fails go watch some of your favorite movies and pay attention to how they were put edited and put together. That should help you start in the right direction.
