Background in art, drawing/sculpting/3D animatino/regular animation/blah blah blah.
editing, compositing.
knowledge of buiding models, photographing models, photograph manipulations, traditional FX like explosions/fake wood/fake concrete type stuff.
that's to be supervisor. some of this stuff you learn at school, but most of it you just have to learn as you do every single job you can find helping out the FX team and the post FX team.
after years and years, (or you get really lucky and you are talented, you might be able to get recognition for you first few jobs), you can be supervisor. but you gotta start at the bottom.
it's probably easier to work on commercials and music videos at a post house doing small effects as you work your way up to feature work, since features take FOREVER.
