I've currently applied to UCLA's Film and TV and Chapman's Film Production programs. I know tuition costs any where from $20,000-$60,000 dollars for 2-4 years. Is it really worth going into debt, or spending your whole life paying that tuition off, when you're not guaranteed a job in the film industry anyway? And also, how many of these schools ACTUALLY have networking opportunities to gain actual contacts within the industry? Thanks in advance!

I think there's already been a lengthy discussion about this somewhere else on the boards, though I don't know where (maybe, NYU Grad says don't go to film school thread?)

There's no right and wrong answer. Film school can get you great contacts and help you make much better films. But you're right, it doesn't come with any guarantees.

I think there is one fundamental truth in this question, though, at least for me. And that truth is, you should be completely passionate about film, and know that you want to pursue it with all your heart, before you commit to such debt and such a demanding program, and afterwards, such a demanding and challenging career. Making films is glorious, but it certainly isn't easy.

Thanks! You are absolutely right though. One of the things that I was told by comic writer Greg Rucka: "You may not have control over talent, the industry, etc. but you do have control over how much you are dedicated to the art and craft." And to keep producing material. Wink
