I'm interested in applying to Ryerson's film program, but was shocked when I heard you are not allowed to include any film or video clips, which is rather ridiculous. I was wondering if anyone here goes to Ryerson, or is applying/has applied? If so, what did you include in your portfolio. I can't figure out what I can possibly put in to make me stand out without submitting video......

I would sya try putting some photos in there, use your knowledge about film and produce soem good photos. Also if you draw or some other kind of art like that, include it. If you have writen any shorts stories that'd probably be good too. I'd say that just about anything that shows your creativity, and ability to creat art. That's just me though.

Hey Stu,

I'm currently enrolled in Ryerson's Film Program, and thought I'd help with any questions you might have about the application process.

Similar to you, I was also surprised to see that we were not able to submit film/video footage with our portfolio, but instead had to include 6 pieces of still work. My advice is also similar to Heliotrope's - try to showcase your personal creativity. Submit a portfolio that will differentiate yourself from the thousands of other students applying for the same spot.

My portfolio consisted of some black and white photography, some stills from a few short films, some computer generated artwork, as well as a piece from art class. I tried to show my artistic diversity as a filmmaker.

Other important things to remember are the additional requirements to go along with the portfolio. I was required to include submit a project proposal, a written statement of my inspirations as a filmmaker, and a resume. These are also important to consider when working on your portfolio.

Anyways, if you have any other questions about the application process, program, school, or whatever, you can reply here, email me or add me to msn: dan_montgomery@hotmail.com

I also applied to York, Humber and Sheridan for similar programs, so if you want to chat about any of them, feel free.
