I'm interested in becoming an independent film maker, i don't just want a degree so i can fight my way in to Hollywood, i want a school that isn't just preparing me for that.
Are there any good film schools out that are tailored more towards independent film making.
in the united states or canada preferably, but i wouldn't mind knowing about ones in other countries.
thanks

I know NYU, Emerson, Columbia in New York, and Columbia in Chicago are good schools that are independent-oriented.

I thought NYU was heavily studio oriented...

In the book Film School Confidential, they classify as the NYU program as more independent-based. While some students do get involved with studios, this is mainly through independent film production.

I think I'll go with the book on this one, because my source was a film graduate from a different school Smile

If you want to be succefull you need to know about all aspects of the industry. Also, what school you go to and what degree you get probably have little effect on your outcome as a filmmaker. You should just make movies. Heck, most film makers either didnt go to college, or didnt go to film school.
