I went to Boston University and I enjoyed it very much.

There is a strong screenwriting program and the film production side was good as well. You are not able to do a film production class until your junior year, although you can take screenwriting courses before then.

I graduated in 1999 however so there may be alot that has changed since then. I do know that they have a new Dean.

Okay, here's a new question I would like to pose (little long): I was talkin to this kid (let me preface this though...This kid could look at everything in a negative light, even if the earth ITSELF were spinning in a positive direction...I mean he could say a FULL bottle of fine Caribbean rum was half empty..who does this?? Anyways..turns out he has a BA in film production from a decent school, got a decent job right away on a film set, couldn't take the *** kissing he perceived was required..or the weaseling. He feels that the average person (ie. most out there) will not really remotely get the kinda job they want in film, and furthermore after attaining said sub-par position..will not even find themselves in a creative environment.
NOW, I do NOT want to believe this... especially as I am lookin to change fields..so its gonna be an uphill battle in a lot of respects! Need to find volunteer stuff etc to bolster the application..da da..da (incidentally if anyone knows of any in boston he he...lemme know!).
Here's what I wanna believe: Yeah, its gonna be wicked hard. BUT if you're good, if you hang on...Eventually things begin to work out. Of course ideally you're making your own artistic choices..but even if you end up on someone else's baby in industry..its STILL gonna be worthwhile. Its still a project where similar-minded people are collaberating on something good!?
Anyone out there care to comment? Course I am not gonna take this one kid's word for it
(man that sounds reading rainbow!) but there's positive and negative views and I don't really know how naive either is?

Your friend said that average people have a pretty minimal chance at breaking into the industry and directing?

That's basically correct. The number of powerful, successful directors is very small and it takes more than hard work to get in the club, so to speak. It's probably possible to make a living in the film industry even if you don't become highly successful, but it's a huge amount of work for minimal return. Most people want to direct, but very few ever get the chance.

Well - I realized in film school that directing really wasn't for me and that what I really loved was editing.

But whatever you want to do in film, I day got for it. There's no way to know if you can make it or not unless you try.

Being a successfull director takes not only a lot of talent, but a lot of hard work, and CONNECTIONS. It's all about connections, and that's why you start out small and work your way up. You may never get to the top, but you'll be making enough money to buy a house, and support yourself (and others if you so choose), and even be able to make your own films on the side. Too many people want to be directors despite the extremely high failure rate, they say they will try their hardest and persevere but without decent connections you have to yeild to the laws of probability and realize that you (more than likely) won't make it as a successfull, big-time director.

I know this sounds kind of pessimistic, and by all means I'm not saying you should just give up and never look back on it. Try as hard as you can, and even if you don't get to where you want to be (director/producer or whatever) at least you can say that you tried. You played the odds and you lost, and that's better than never trying in the first place.

Ween, I totally believe in the same thing. If you are real good, dedicated, nd hard working, you will make your way. This may be not the way of a top director, but you will find something that will fulfil your life and make you happy.

I hate those total negative film school kidsSmile
