I have been active in film production companies for the past two years and have worked aside a few major projects. Unfortunatley, because I spent all my time working on these seperate projects, my gpa (like under a 3) sucks. I also have taken a few courses in film production as my side business ventures don't allow me to be as creative as I would like, so I do enjoy the film school atmosphere. Does any one have advice on where I should apply (i.e- a school that looks primarily on your portfolio, more than your grades)?

I don't think you'll find a major school that will admit you based mostly on your portfolio. Emerson might be an exception. Other than that, I'd look into smaller art school like Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, NC School of the Arts or NYFA.

Actors? What actors?

Is this for grad or undergrad?

I know for some grad programs you'll have to submit GRE scores if the GPA is less than 3.0

For undergrad, I have no idea. sorry

I'm in a similar situation as you. I did major writing projects which resulted in my grades dropping, but it was only to a 3.0, not below.

I;d say it depends on how great your portfolio is and what the proects you were working on were.

It really depends on quite a few things.

1. Which schools are you looking at in particular?
2. Do you have any excuses for the GPA? Bad freshman year, but grades slowly getting better over the next two years?
3. SAT scores?

There are so many great film programs that will be open to you, it's not medical school we're talking about here! So don't get to wrapped up in the top ten. NYU, USC, ect... I've been to many student film festivals and seen work from those programs that are on par with the "easier to get in programs" hell even non accredited schools. I will say it's in your interest to go to school somewhere near the industry, say New York or California because there are stronger opportunities.

Keep focusing on your work and find a school that will allow you to stay productive! Great schools are a great privilege but not at all a threshold to success. Hell if you ask me you're better off finding a comprable program that won't cost an arm and a leg, NYU amputees know what I'm talking about.
