What is the real difference and the pluses and minuses of a film school, such as the Los Angeles FIlm School, versus a college, such as USC if you are getting a film production degree?

This is strictly the plus and minus of attending USC versus LAFS.

+ + + + + +

You'll get a BFA from an accredited university, instead of a certificate or Associates (not sure which they give)...which means you can pursue most master's degrees, be it an MFA, MBA, or JD, should you desire to do so.

If you discover film's not for you, you can go do whatever it is you want, and not feel like you've wasted a bunch of money on classes that don't apply to any other field...your GEs will transfer to most other majors.

USC has an amazing reputation and alumni network, and has well-known, successful professionals teaching the classes, so you'll learn from the best...and the degree will state that.

More money.

Longer program.

You have to complete those pesky general requirements instead of just taking film classes.

Jayimess- thanks for the HELPFUL comment.

I think I was being a bit confusing though. I did not really mean the actual schools, just the type. Hypothetically if I know that film is what I will do for the rest of my life, is it better to go to a four year college or a film school. And post school stuff as well, do you have the same opportunities if you go to a college versus a film school.

The analysis is basically the same, no matter which programs you compare.

IMO, if you're gonna go to film school, go for an accredited degree. Some of the "trade" programs are really just money pits, and the networking and quality of education just isn't there.

Have you considered the Brooks Institute of Photography? It's kind of a happy medium...
