Who here is Canadian? What is your thoughts on Canadian film Schools and recommendations?

I have heard University of Ryerson is a great school as well as Concordia. I am looking at Film Production more then film studies.
Even though you do both in either of the fields.

Canadian input is needed!

Yea Ryerson definately has some "fierce competition" as you coined. I know quite a few people who went to York , and most of them ended up transfering to Concordia, because York promised a lot of things that they didn't have. Especially concerning connections with Sheridans amazing animation program. So becareful about that one. I want to stay in Ontario as well, so if no luck happens with Ryerson, then I might just re-apply next year.

Ya working on my right now.. Not really sure what approach I am gonna take? How are they suppose to get the most talented filmmakers if they only want to see photographs?

I am gonna mix it up, a few photo's, and a few computer generated graphic type stuff..

Its bull**** though I agree.. For Concordia you can submit up to 6 minutes of footage.. which is great for me.

well at least at ryerson they want to see some sort of artistic peice... what the hell was that york application all about? Which three movies would I take to an island with me... stupid questions!

How will they pick the best students when all they have to work with is "what kind of sign would you have hanging on your wall" ?!

LOL, that's exactly why I didn't apply to York. I know to many disapointed filmmakers that come out of that school.

I go to Sheridan College and I am in the Media Arts(Film and Television) program. It is a very good program and is well respected in the Toronto film industry. This program gives you a bit of television studies along with the film studies. It is mainly a technical program, however there are some theory courses you must take. This year, the Media Arts program spent over one million dollars upgrading its television studio to one of the best educational studios in Canada. We also have a lot of film equipment that we can access, it's quite a large collection and we are quite fortunate. The program also has a lot of connections in Toronto with the film and television industries. There is a placement in third year, and we can pretty much go wherever we want because there are Sheridan graduates that work there or the company knows of our reputation. First year gives you a bsic understanding of many aspects of television and film making. In second year, you go in the direction you want to go in by choosing the courses you want to take. We also produce our own short films, documentaries and public service announcements in second year. In third year, you have one major project in first semester, its a 20-30 minute movie and then in second semester you go on your placement. So this program gives you a great understanding of how films are made and it prepares you for the industry well!

Hope this helps some you looking for a good film school.

I have also heard some not so good things about the York University film program. It is mainly a theory and film appreciation based program, there is little actual film production. Ryerson I have heard also is a good program, but very difficult to get into.

Good Luck to everyone applying!

I forgot to write something in my last post. Our program also has a very good connection with rental companies in Toronto such as William F. Whites and Production Services, so having this good conenction could help you in the future if you ever need to rent equipment. We also have a good connection with Absolute Locations in Toronto, one of the major locations comaonies in the city.

Just thought I would add this information to my last post
