i just finished there, and about mid year, the film department got a big kick in the ass and suddenly were teaching some excellent techniques.
I would strongly suggest going for the gold like NYU or AFI or London Film Institute, or CalArts.
but if you want to live in San Francisco, and have money to spend, check out AAC. They don't focus too much on film theory or philosophy (SF STATE is best for that), but the equipment at AAC is the best in any San Francisco school. They have several Avid Suits, Several After Effects suites, a dressed sound stage, a small theater, they have some really awesome teachers, like Thad Povey in experimental film class. The school is constantly adapting and growing and always are getting upgraded with their equipment.
it may feel like you are starting out slow, but they teach you from the ground up, so you may start with video cameras just to get a concept of how to tell a story with a moving image.
now this is a very commercial school, and to be honest, in your first year you may find yourself in a crowd of directors, but by the fourth year, you will notice that everyone really finds what aspect they like to do in a film, and so they realistically follow those goals.
unlike, from what i know at state where it seems everyone is a director.
AAC also is geared more as a business trade school. they provide the tools and education to market yourself in a very competive field. They help hone your intuition as to create what most people would like to see - so you may find your creativity sobered, but i think that can be a good thing because your more apt to get work if you think about your audience and entertaining them.
CCAC and SF Art Inst. foster your creativty and help you learn how to curate an event or furnish a film installation in galleries or screenings. i think both are decent and interesting schools, but equipment is lacking.
State always seems to be out of equipment, and the new equipment, i hear, is on hold to be used by staff first. so you are probably going to be renting from Film arts foundation alot or Adolph Gassers.
so that's my take. i am a satisfied customer. good luck what ever school you choose.
take care,
