It's okay. I think the dialogue between characters could have been better. And definitely better acting. Other than that, I thought it was fine for a student film.
First off I wouldn't know what NYU is looking for (outside of an absurd tuition) so I won't even pretend to speak for them.
I liked your framing and courage to actually go out and about with your actors, so many student films never leave thier apartments! But the story is lacking here man. The "drug deal gone bad" is a bit played out; in fact it's as dead as the "hitman with a heart of gold" or the "writer with writers block" (usually made by a filmmaker with writers block.
But you are certainly a competant director so my humble advice would be to find or create a story with a little more heart, make it a little more personal.

I forgot to add that the sort of cliched stories are really a rite of passage for students, we've all made at least one! I know I have!! You have to make 'em at some point just to know what you do and don't like.
Early on it's almost like the excitement just to make a movie makes you zip right through story development! So don't feel bad in any way, you've got that one out of your system and in a much higher quality way than many people in the same position!
Plus you're a step ahead of the folks who just talk about making movies then never actually produce anything!

titaniumdoughnut, I thought that the portfolio was a rather large chunk of the admissions for undergrad. NYU? OR am I just mistaken?
