I don't know about you guys but I can't seem to come up with a story to save me life... or start my career. I want to write a story that's fairly simple but fresh. It will have to be something that can be done with a minimal cast and basically 1 or 2 man crew. I want to do a short about 15 minutes max. I want to do a genre piece either action/adventure, fantacy or horror/thiller/suspense. I don't know if it's just the fact that I don't sit at my computer enough or I just am not cut out to be a writer. I don't I just want to do something. I haven't directed a movie in almost 2 years!! I may be being too strict on myself. I just don't want to make crappy movie - if you know what I mean. HELP!
I've got two pieces of advice for you. One or the other will definitely work, and I can assure you it wont be too difficult to accomplish them. Option one: just write. Write absolute crap, and then take what's decent and write something semi-decent about that, and so on. you'll have a masterpiece in no time/sometime in the next 30 years or so. Option two: whatever you do, don't write. This one seems to work better for me, for whatever reason, and I'm no newcomer when it comes to writers block. just keep your mind open to possibilities. That funny story your friend tells you or the bad joke you made trying to pick up that hot girl could turn out to be the next Gone With The Wind. I'm currently in the process of actively filming/writing/editing 5+ films, and I can tell you I never sat down at a computer and suddenly had an idea for any of them.
Actors? What actors?

Just go out and live. Walk around, see the sights, be IN PUBLIC as much as possible. Go places you don't typically go. I promise you'll see images that inspire you. When I say images, I mean little snapshots of the world, maybe something someone says, or the way a person looks, or a stairway somewhere. When you like something, write it down. Think about it all day. Ideas should start forming in your mind.
many writers carry a notebook with them at all times for this very reason. I've been meaning to, cause I always forget my best ones before I get home.

Also go do some research about those genre's, watch movies from those genres and take mental notes. Anything that might be adoptable *not stealing* but presenting something in your own way after being inspired by something you see/hear.

thats really how Kane works tho, he's admited to holding american psycho as one of his favorite films. what can you expect? if you dont believe me, when his latest film is up it shows such...
.........and if it doesnt, dont hold me responsible for tricking you into deciding to watch it in hopes of seeing dead hobos.

American Psycho is one of my all time favs..........
C - You have to force yourself into writing mode and after a couple of minutes of pacing around thinking frantically about what your movie is going to be about, the good ideas will pop into your head and more will form from that and more from that etc etc. Then you sit down and WRITE stop procrastinating. Carry a small spirale green notebook with you in your back black jeans pocket to write down ideas throughout the day.
If all else fails, don't fret. Don't worry. This is what you need to do : take lots of drugs. And I mean ALL SORTS. Just distort your reality with them for a week straight and afterward, if you survive, tell me if you didn't get some good ideas! Then it's all chips and dip after that! Remember: The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.

Thanks for all the replies. I haven't been near a computer... been doing some of that "get out in the world" stuff. I think if I do that I should come up with at least something to shoot. I will try these ideas over the next few weeks and let you guys know what I come up with... - Happy Filmmaking.
