whether or not you need explosive type effects, largly depends on the your movies genre and plot. For instance a high paced action movie will almost certainly have some sort of explosive effect, where as the only thing near an explosion in a romance movie may be a cork popping off a champagne bottle(where's the bomb shelter!? )I completely agree that when using explosions you have to use self control and a ton of precaution. I know explosives can be dangerous, my friend was trying to blow up an army man one time(he's a little weird) and he got a third degree burn on his arm, but most of us aren't that stupid(at least i hope not).I say as long as you are only using real world sources(not random internet sites), and you take extreme caution, then using explosions is fine. And also, since safety precautions/warnings were given, no one but the idiot that seriously injured his or her self can be held responsible. It's all about planning, planning, planning, if what can go wrong will, then you just have to plan so that it won't. well, that's just my two cents.
I don't set out to make "art" I just try to make something with a beginning, middle, end, and some characters...the art seems to come during the process.
