VANCOUVER, British Columbia, November 12- Patricia Rhodes, a student at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), was presented the annual Kodak Fellowship in Film Preservation here today at the Association of Moving Image Archivists' Annual Conference. The $10,000 Kodak Fellowship, which was created in cooperation with the AMIA education committee, was established in 2000 for the purpose of assisting the next generation of moving image archivists.

"This fellowship was designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in this important field," says Rick Utley, vice president of Preservation, PRO-TEK Media Preservation Services and AMIA treasurer. "Two of our previous three recipients have already graduated and are professionals working in the preservation field. We hope this fellowship will help Patricia Rhodes in achieving those same goals."

As the recipient of the Kodak Fellowship, Rhodes has earned a six-week paid summer internship at Kodak and other film restoration facilities in Los Angeles. The fellowship also includes a $4,000 scholarship for the upcoming academic year and complementary registration to the AMIA conference.

"This fellowship is a culmination of many internships and years of interest in this field," says Rhodes. "Hands-on experience in a professional environment such as a lab or studio will be invaluable to me, and supplement the technical knowledge I have gained in film school. I'm looking forward to being a part of this industry and working with the many experienced professionals."

Rhodes, a native of Superior, Wisconsin, moved to California in 2001 to earn her master's in film at CalArts. That same year, she earned a paid internship at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Film Archive where she is currently employed. Rhodes has worked on various film programs with internationally recognized film artists, and has had her films shown in various film festivals. She received her bachelor's in film and photography at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1999 where she won the Vanderlip Award for her exhibition as well as two merit scholarships in photography.

Rhodes intends to pursue a career in motion picture archiving and preservation, particularly the preservation of sound materials, as well as experimental and animated short films.

"Sound materials are vastly neglected," says Rhodes. "I have been a sound mixer on many student films, and know how important it is to record a quality product, it should be equally as important to save it."

The Kodak Film Preservation Fellowship is designed to assist the recipient by facilitating his or her formal education, offering hands-on training, and providing an introduction to the moving image archive community. It is jointly administered by Kodak and AMIA. Kodak funds the program and plays the lead role in designing and administering the internship. AMIA manages the selection process and administers the scholarship and conference components.

Information concerning the 2004 Kodak Fellowship, including application instructions, will be posted on www.amianet.org. #
