Revolucity Scripts Needs Beta Testers!
What is Revolucity Scripts? Since about its invention, studios have had the almighty grip on the creative element of filmmaking. Men in suits are deciding, as we speak, what films we will and won't enjoy, and how to get the largest possible amount of us to pay $10 for two hours of our time. That's what it's about right now, time and money. Where's the art?
While the independent film movement is starting to cause a stir again, we don't think it's moving fast enough, and unfortunately, deciding factors still tend to be time and money. We recognize the importance of time and money in a production, but again,
where is the art? Revolucity Scripts is a new website that will change this. It will provide an opportunity for young aspiring filmmakers and seasoned professionals alike to take advantage of the newest technological tool, a tool which is undeniably the future of the medium but remains a mystery as to how to implement it: the internet. The brainchild of Dominic Riccobene of Vanishing Point Pictures, Revolucity Scripts is rooted in the idea of "open source" screenplays. The site enables members to actively submit, edit, discuss, collaborate on, and distribute screenplays in an open-source environment.
Revolucity works similarly to Wikipedia.com <http://Wikipedia.com> , but is tailored towards screenplays. Anyone can submit, anyone can edit, and anyone can use the content, under specific terms. This is made possible by the GNU Free Documentation License and the process of CopyLeft (as opposed to copyright). These licenses state that the content may be used at will as long as the author is credited and the next version is made available using the same license and is free. Thus, we have a dynamic "copyright" that lasts through every version of a script. It protects the author's work, and at the same time makes their work available for everyone to use! You receive credit for your work, but when the art of storytelling and filmmaking is more important than personal credit, the story reaches a large population of potential creators.
What are you signing up for? Our philosophy is that filmmaking, as the art of storytelling, has great potential as an open-source medium. Rather than capitalizing off of star power, mindless CG, and advertising, we encourage thinking about the audience you want to reach and learning how to reach it.
It all starts at the script. Revolucity Scripts allows authors to keep their work, but at the same time getting the story out to the world, for feedback, editing, criticism, and reaching that audience. By making scripts available for anyone to access and change, it opens infinite possibilities for independent screenwriters and directors. Imagine the script that would come from the hard work and ideas of many people from all over the world actively creating, editing, discussing, and producing projects. The result could, we hope, be revolutionary.
Your ideas in script form are being put up on the web for public use. Don't think of it as someone stealing your ideas. Think of it as a worldwide conference table, where everyone contributes to writing and editing your work in a constructive environment. Any changes made can be monitored, all drafts are saved, and malicious edits can be reversed and the perpetrators banned. Ever encounter a roadblock in writing? Someone from across the globe might have the perfect solution. And what do you have to lose?
So sign up, start writing, and help become a key component in transforming the medium of film as we know it!
