Or, C) He hears one of the people in his dream talking about their dream, and... he get's trapped in a string of dreams. Like a dream within a dream. And then things get both complicated and... stupid. I'll shut up.
Don't worry about cliche's. Life itself is one.
"Your girlfriend will find someone better. You will become homeless. And you know whats worse...? You will still suck at Tekken."
sweet twist on an old cliche! i know a person who is real into this dream manipulation stuff, so there is some basis in (sort of) reality. you can train your mind to let you become conscious during a dream and then you have total control over it apparently (rather like being a film director )

The idea reminds me a little of Being John Malkovich; in the beginning they can only be Malkovich, but eventually they learn to control what he says and does. It's a cool idea and could definitely work if done right. The above parallel to being a film director is also a cool twist that could be somehow incorporated. I say roll with it.
As to what JW said, I think one of the reasons "Being John Malkovitch" was called "BEING John Malkovitch" was because although he goes into John's body and can control John's actions, he never truly becomes John Malkovitch, he's just interpreted as JM by other people (the ones that don't know what actually happened).
You've definitely got something here. Keep working with it. It could make a fine short, but the dream hopping probably wouldn't carry you through a feature. That's my impression, anyway. That said, it's definitely a case where the character development will give you more material and places to turn.
And I absolutely love Waking Life. Kind of a surrealistic My Dinner With Andre.

It could only be a feature if there's more than one subplot--you could probably use a good 15-20 minutes of this idea depending on the style and how in depth the dreams go, but you would need a waking plot maybe as an intro for it to be something close to a feature.
