I wrote this script about a year ago with some friends and we plan to start shooting this summer. I'd like to have the script completely finished in about a month so that auditions can start, and casting descions can be made. I'm welcome to any suggestions, constructive critiscm (I'm sure there's a ton of stuff that could be improved in here), whatever advise you may have, I want it! It's called "Complementary Love" and essentially is a romantic comedy spoof. Be harsh, we need it! Thanks in advance.

1 DAY – EXT. State Street 1

We are on the opposite street of Java J’s. A young
girl steps into the frame, we only see the back of her
head and long, gold, locks. She is in a hurry and
waits for the cars to stop driving to cross the street. The camera follows her into the coffee shop.
While this goes on we hear –

CELESTE (V.O.)
I am a simple girl, in a high tech digital world, wait … sorry. Truly this time, I am, only but a simple girl. There isn’t much I want in life, not much at all, any of my co-workers could tell you this.

2 DAY – INT. Java J’s 2

We are now in the shop as the narration continues. Celeste walks into the shop and smiles at her co-workers and a few customers.

CELESTE (V.O.)
All I really want in life, is to serve my complementary water, serve my water and … find someone, my one and only, soul mate.

The narration stops when she sees her two best friends, Paige and Charlie. She heads to their table.

GRANT
Hey Celeste.

CELESTE sighs and puts her jacket and purse on to the table and sits. The two (and Paige) converse under the voice over, but we do not hear them, only Celeste.

CELESTE (V.O.)
This is Grant. He’s one of my closest friends, he’s not really the brightest bow tie in the drawer, but he does have his strong points. A few months ago he had a thing for me, and maybe I had a slight thing for him ... but it didn’t really work out.

CUT TO:



3 NIGHT – INT. Restaurant 3

Flashback! This is back to when there was a thing between Celeste and Grant. The two are seated in a nice restaurant and are in mid-conversation when we see them. Celeste sips her water as Grant tries to be a fun and interesting date.

GRANT
...So then the doctor was like, “Grant, you don’t really need to be taking this pill anymore, but if you just switched to the green one ... I can’t remember what it was called, it’ll help you with your –

CELESTE
Uh huh ... that sounds ... nice. Sooo, after this would you like go to a movie or something?

GRANT
Sure, that’d be great. So, I switched to the green one and it worked out alright but in the end the blue seemed best for me. Have you ever taken any medication?

CELESTE gives GRANT a blank stare and we

CUT BACK TO:

4 DAY – INT. Java J’s 4


The three friends are still talking and CELESTE’S VOICE OVER continues.

CELESTE (V.O.)
So I searched in other places for love, like the theatre ...

SMASH CUT TO:

5 NIGHT – INT. MOVIE THEATRE 5

CELESTE is seated next to GAY GUY 1 and GAY GUY 2. She looks at GAY GUY 1 whom her date is supposed to be with, be he seems more interested in his other company. CELESTE taps his shoulder, but he is too interested into GAY GUY 2, CELESTE gives the camera a look.

(CONT’D)
CELESTE (V.O.)

The gym ...

SMASH CUT TO:

6 DAY – INT. A GYM 6

CELESTE is with a BODYBUILDER and they are on a date, CELESTE is all dressed up and BODYBUILDER is in a sweat suit. She picks up some water and sips it as he lifts more weights.

CELESTE (V.O.)
And tons of other places. But every time I just ended back up here...

7 DAY – INT. Java J’s 7


CELESTE
... here. (Turns back to group, and we jump into the real movie) So I was reading this amazing novel. It’s really great, it’s about this girl, and she works in a coffee shop and she meets this guy – oh, it’s wonderful!

PAIGE
Sounds … interesting … Who’s it by?

CELESTE
Well, it’s actually by that same author who wrote the
one about that cowboy –

PAIGE
- and the ranch,

GRANT
- and Burley!,

ALL THREE
- and the endless love!

CELESTE
Yeah, it’s really great.

A young woman crosses pointing to a group of young girls.

KATHLEEN
Hello girls! What’s happening? Rehearsal is about to start, we’re running the flower scene today, when you’re ready, head on over.

GRANT
Who’s that?

CELESTE
Oh, (giggles) that’s Kathleen. She’s directing that
show I’m in, over at the theatre, you see, we’re
theatre people.

GRANT
Not her, him.

HE points over to a young man, helping a CUSTOMER pick out a smoothie flavor.

CELESTE
Oh, uh … I dunno … (smiles)

The MANAGER of Java J’s comes out of the kitchen.

MANAGER
(calling)
Hey! Celeste! Get over to your water, it’s time to get going!

CELESTE
Sorry guys, gotta motor! See ya later!

8 DAY – INT. Java J’s 8

CELESTE bursts through the door. She throws her stuff to the chair next to her station. A woman walks to her and asks for some water. She pours the water, and shoves it into her hand. PAIGE walks up.


PAIGE
What’s wrong?

CELESTE
We’re through.

PAIGE
You and Andrew?

CELESTE
No!

PAIGE
Oh. You and Phillip.

CELESTE
No! Josh and I.

PAIGE obviously didn’t know about the latest boy.

PAIGE
Well, I’m sorry … but, I don’t you think you’ll be alone for long … look over there.

CARDEN is cleaning the blender and staring at CELESTE … again. CELESTE sighs, picks up her stuff, and leaves Java J’s. Paige looks at CARDEN, at the door, back at CARDEN, and then runs out the door, protesting.

9 DAY – EXT. State Street (outside Java J’s) 9

CELESTE has seated herself at the outdoor table. PAIGE comes out of the store.
PAIGE
What’s wrong now?

CELESTE
I’m just not ready for this huge, commitment.

PAIGE
What commitment? He’s a smoothie guy …

CELESTE
Paige, you just don’t understand, okay? I need a little time for myself now. I’ll call you later.

CELESTE gets up and crosses the street, goes to the theatre. GRANT has walked up, HE sits.

GRANT
We gotta get those two together.

10 INT – DAY Java J’s 10

PAIGE and CARDEN enter Java J’s. CARDEN looks around with amazement. THEY cross to a tall table and sit.

CARDEN
Man, I’ve only been working here a week and already your dad has given me a raise. He’s really nice!

PAIGE
To you maybe. He never even let me work here!

CARDEN
(HE Laughs)
Well, maybe if they need a Complementary Sugar guy or something.

PAIGE
Hardy, Har, Har. Very funny. Oh, there’s Celeste … You’ll like her (smiles) … I gotta run, but I’ll talk to you later!

PAIGE leaves Java J’s, while CELESTE enters, they say ‘hi’ and go on their way. CELESTE heads to her water. CARDEN walks up behind her and taps her shoulder.

CARDEN
Um, hi …

CELESTE twirls around (in slow motion of course).

CELESTE
Oh! (giggles) I’m Celeste … the complementary water girl.

CARDEN
That’s a pretty name. (HE stares)


CELESTE
(giggles) Soo ... what’s your name?

CARDEN
Oh, uh, yeah ... it’s Carden. I’m the new Smoothie
Guy. Paige, you know him right? His dad got me the job. I think I’m really gonna like it here. You, uh, the people seem really nice.


CELESTE giggles and they walk off, onto their water.

11 EXT – DAY Outside Java J’s 11

PAIGE and CARDEN are sitting at the outside table at Java J’s, they are discussing over a glass of complementary water.

PAIGE
I dunno, Carden, I really like her … I think you should try to ask her out. By the way she talks I can tell that she might even like you, like, like you like you.

CARDEN
I dunno … It’s just –

PAIGE
You really should, Carden, I mean really! You all would be great together. Just try. Look! There she is!

CELESTE has in fact walked up and seats herself.

CELESTE
Hi guys.


PAIGE
Hey there. What’s going on with you this morning?

CELESTE
Oh, nothing much, just finished up at the theatre.


PAIGE
Well, guys, I’m gonna run, but uh –

HE stands and whispers in CARDEN’S ear –

PAIGE (cont’d)
Ask her out already! (TO BOTH) See you guys!

CARDEN
So, um, Celeste –

CELESTE giggles and says, “mmm hmm.”

CARDEN (cont’d)
I was wondering, you’re not, uh, going out with anyone … right now, are you?

CELESTE
Um, actually, no I’m not … yet! (giggles)

CARDEN
Well, in that case, I was wondering … would you, date me? Oh! That’s suave! Date me! Oh gosh –

CELESTE
Carden, I’d love to, (giggles), date you.

THEY smile at each other as the camera pulls back.

12 EXT – DAY A Park 12

CELESTE is seated in a perfect picnic area with a summer dress and a huge hat on. She is speaking to little animals (much like in Snow White) and Carden steps into frame. He sits and they eat and then start to flirt, kiss, and roll around (not like that, in a sweet innocent way). Everything is perfect. We cut to various scenes of them being perfect together then to:

CARDEN slams down a complementary water cup.

CARDEN
When are you going to get a real job, Celeste?

CELESTE
I – am, very happy with this job. You may not think it’s much, but it means a lot … to me. And – and – and the people to whom, I serve the complementary water.


CARDEN
Oh! Celeste! Get your head out of the romance novel, this isn’t a romance movie, life is going on all around you, and you are too busy serving, this, this, complementary water, to even notice.

CELESTE
Well, I think I’ve noticed a lot more about life then you, Carden my dear. Rich and poor, young and old, everyone is thirsty, Carden. And I, I! give them the water they need, for free! You, you and your smoothies, 3.50 each, I think that’s a bit much, don’t you Carden?

CARDEN
Well, ya know, some of us have to make a living. And you, you could be so much more than a complementary water girl, you know, you’ve got potential.

CELESTE
Well, I have always wanted to be an actress … (slams fist on the table) but that’s not the point. I am happy, for the first time in my life, (crying) who cares if it’s not a job with prestige it’s who – I – am. (pause) The complementary water girl.

CARDEN
Fairly pathetic don’t you think?

HE storms out of Java J’s and the camera goes with him. CELESTE leans out the door.

CELESTE
Carden. Mmm! Screw thou!

HE whips around.
CARDEN
No, actually, Celeste, (intensely) screw thee

CELESTE sits, defeated, on the stairs. She starts to sob. We fade to the good times –

14 EXT – DAY The Good Times 14

We are on the steps of Celeste’s apartment. Celeste and Carden sing a giant musical number, while Paige stands in the background, and hums, and sways to the music. In the end, he sings the opera.

CARDEN
All you need is love.


CELESTE
A girl has got to eat.

CARDEN
All you need is love.

CELESTE
Or she'll end up on the streets.

CARDEN
All you need is love.

CELESTE
Love is just a game.

CARDEN
I was made for loving you baby, you were made for loving me.

CELESTE
The only way of loving me baby, is to pay a lovely
fee

CARDEN
Just one night, give me, just one night.

CELESTE
There's no way, cause you can't pay.

CARDEN
In the name of love, one night in the name of love.

CELESTE
You crazy fool, I won't give in to you.

CARDEN
Don't leave me this way, I can't survive, without your sweet love, oh baby, don't leave me this way.

CELESTE
You'd think that people would have had enough of silly love songs.

CARDEN
I look around me and I see, it isn't so, oh no.


CELESTE
Some people want to fill the world with silly love
songs.

CARDEN
Well what's wrong with that, I'd like to know? cause
here I go again! Love lifts us up where we belong,
where eagles fly, on a mountain high.

CELESTE
Love makes us act like we are fools, throw our lives
away for one happy day.

CARDEN
We could be heroes, just for one day.

CELESTE
You, you will be mean.

CARDEN
No I won't!

CELESTE
And I, I--I'll drink all the time.

CARDEN
We should be lovers.

CELESTE
We can't do that.

CARDEN
We should be lovers, and that's a fact.

CELESTE
Though nothing, will keep us together.

CARDEN
We could steal time...

BOTH
Just for one day. We could be heroes, for ever and
ever. We could be heroes, for ever and ever. We could be heroes...

CARDEN

CELESTE

We zoom into CELESTE’S face and then zoom back out and find that we are in:

15 EXT – DAY Back to outside the apartment 15

CELESTE is sitting on the stairs, crying, SHE stands.

16 INT – NIGHT $2 A Night 16

PAIGE is sitting down at a table. CELESTE walks in and comes up to PAIGE, SHE taps HIS shoulder, HE turns.

PAIGE
Celeste! What are you doing here? I didn’t think you liked to go clubbing anymore.

CELESTE
I dunno, ever since Carden and I broke up, I’ve thought about coming back to $2 A Night, to work here, rather than Java J’s … I’m just not sure if I could stand seeing him all the time.

PAIGE
Maybe some of our old dancing will help you decide.

The whole club does a very well choreographed dance to “Yeah” or some catchy song like that. When the song finishes, PAIGE is smiling … he has never been this happy before. He is ready to tell Celeste how he really feels for her.

PAIGE
Celeste … I … I really … really, really …


CELESTE
What was that Paige? Sorry … I was thinking about Carden, I think we should get together again.

PAIGE is heartbroken.

PAIGE
Oh … yeah … that’ll be great … you better go find him … before it’s too late. You deserve to be truly happy … truly.

CELESTE
Paige, that’s really sweet. What am I doing here? I do
love Carden, and he loves me, we shouldn’t fight over silly things like, our jobs, but be happy with who we both are, and the relationship we have.
PAIGE
Well, that’s that then. Let’s go… Let’s go find him! I’ll check Java J’s.



11 INT – NIGHT Java J’s 11

CELESTE runs inside and screams to PAIGE:

CELESTE
Well!?! He wasn’t in any of the shops or at his house.

PAIGE stands up and runs to Celeste.

PAIGE
He’s not here either, don’t worry, we’ll find him!

THEY run out of Java J’s onto State Street.

12 EXT – NIGHT State Street 12

PAIGE and CELESTE burst out of Java J’s. PAIGE points to the Paramount.

PAIGE
THERE! He’s across the street over there! Run! Run for the love of God RUUUN!

CELESTE starts to cross as Paige shouts –

PAIGE
CAR! CAR! CAR!

CELESTE
What!?! Carden?!? Where?!?!?

Just then, a car, driven by PAUL, comes inches away from CELESTE as PAUL slams on the breaks. CELESTE slams to the ground with a faint –

CELESTE
Oh! (SHE gets up) I guess Paige meant an actual car, not Carden, it’s so hard to understand him with that speech impede - … speech impre - … his speech problem.

PAUL leaps out of the car

PAUL
Oh my GOD! Are you okay?

CELESTE lies there. PAUL shakes her

PAUL (cont’d)
C’mon! Speak to me!

CELESTE’S eyes blink a little, she coughs. She begins to gag.

PAUL (cont’d)
Oh no! C’mon! C’mon!

HE taps her back and a little white thing pops out of her mouth.


PAUL (cont’d)
What happened?

CELESTE
I - … I –

PAUL
You - … You –

CELESTE
(Over the top)
I choked … on my Altoid … I’m okay now …

PAUL
Are you sure?

CELESTE begins to get up
CELESTE
Um … yes, as I said before –

PAUL
Okay. But if there’s anything, anything … I could give you a foot massage. Really anything …

CELESTE
I’m fine! Really, like I said …

PAIGE
CELESTE! There he goes! Into the theatre! Carden!


CELESTE runs to the theater, she runs inside under the sign and Carden has just walked into the theater. She runs to the door and pulls – its’ locked. She bangs on the door, crying –

CELESTE
CARDEN! CARDEN! CARDEEEEEN!

CELESTE has been defeated, she sits, falling to the door. A finger taps her shoulder, she stands and turns around, it’s Carden. She jumps into his arms.

CELESTE
I’m so sorry.

CARDEN
I could really go for some complementary water about
now.

She looks up into his eyes, and smiles.

CELESTE
I think I’m all out of that, but I have tons of, complementary … love.


FADE TO BLACK
