I just read that they're remaking John Carpenter's masterpiece, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. It's some first timer doing it and ****ing Ethan Hawke is starring in it. Ethan Hawke sucks! What the hell are they thinking? Has Hollywood not ****ed up enough, now they have to remake a movie that the mainstream Hollywood community probably doesn't even appreciate?!?

I admit, it does sound a little troubling, but to get a little more faith in Ethan Hawke, I suggest you rent Training Day.

And by the way...

its a remake. dont get all freaked out. whether you like remakes or not, realize they do a few things.

take, for example, solaris, because i like that movie.

i happened to love the remake. but even if the original is better, think about this. the average person is not going to think to go rent a 4-hour long russian movie. the average moviegoer is likely to see a modern remake of a movie.

even though remakes often express different ideas or interpretations, often they still portray the same theme or some important ideas, that otherwise would have been lost because of the time gap.

granted, nothing by carpenter is that far off, but it's almost a rule of thumb. the average moviegoer doesnt give a crap about film nearly as much as some of us do... but the simple fact remains that they can still pull something good out of a movie... you just have to give it to them. remaking a film in a modern environment with modern styles and modern actors is a good way to grab their attention.

why do you think so many movies are popular, even if they are not original? because to the average person, they often can be; they havent all seen all the classics, and often havent seen anything before their generation.

so it can be a good and bad thing; the remake can be terrible, but it also can can be good. you need to wait and see. placing it in the hands of a first-time director could turn out terrible, or it could turn out great. again, you just need to wait and see. he may have done a lot of great work that just wasn't mainstream. who knows?

and whats with the anti-ethan hawke stuff? you really think hes a terrible actor? i mean, i see a lot of people just dislike actors who are "mainstream" and/or are all over the magazines and such... but come on, the guys a good actor. check out Gattaca.... AWESOME movie. acting, included.

never seen it, but from what ive heard assault has the same premise of night of the living dead or rio bravo. so its not like it was very original in the first place. of course, what do i know? i havent seen the movie so i probably shouldnt be putting my opinion in the ring. and, ethan hawke is a lot better than most actors his age out there.

if youre looking for a witty signature, youre looking in the wrong place.

i ain't no big ethan hawke fan or anything.. but after someone on this site mentioned Tape i rented it and man did i like his performance. i thought the movie was great overall, and suprisingly very easy to watch, considering it takes place entirely in one hotel/motel room. i even had my old man watch it and he dug it.. and he is one tough critic.

but yea, ethan hawke = ok in my book

"So,uhh...what's the symbology here?"

Here's an Interview with the make-up artist of the original "Assault on Precinct 13." His name is Don Bledsoe and has an interesting past:
