There are two ways of writing an adaption, writing one which stays as true as possible to the book, and writing one that is based off a book, but it adapted in such way that is uses the aspects of cinema to their highest potential by not keeping stringently to the series and order of events etc.

Literature and Cinema are such different media that it is nearly imposible to do both. And naturally the second makes for a better film, but upsets the fans of the literary piece the most. Its all dependant on your target audience.
