The following news article may be of interest to some of the screenwriters among you. I thought I would use it myself, but again I think it would not work for main stream Indian screen (though this news report is from India). It might be worthwhile to explore in these lines - "When he was a kid, he was told he was a boy, and he behaved like one. When he attains age 20, he was declared by the doctors that (s)he was a women ..."

AP man turns woman, stigma takes its toll
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Hyderabad: After living as a male for 20 years, Anand is experiencing an emotional and physical churn. He is turning into a woman. Doctors say it is medically plausible and common, because of a genetic abnormality. But Anand and his parents are shocked. Anand, from Bellampally in Adilabad district, was brought to the Government Maternity Hospital, Nayapul, two days ago. His mother Anjamma reported to the doctors that Anand is behaving like a girl and his physical appearance has changed. He is experiencing menstrual cycle too. Doctors conducted a series of genetic tests and concluded that except the male organ, Anand has completely transformed into a woman. He has developed breast and ovaries, and the Ychromosome that determines the sex of humans is absent. Twenty years back when Anand was born at the Government Maternity Hospital in Sultan Bazaar, doctors could not pinpoint the sex of the child. It had male organs, but also physical features of female. After some time, the doctors declared the child a boy and Anand grew up as one. He was sent to a boys’ school, but was taunted there. As years passed, Anand’s female side became prominent and his parents stopped his schooling after Class VII. Dr B Kalidas, resident medical officer-1 of the Government Maternity Hospital, Nayapul, said Anand is a woman and ‘she’ could lead a perfect marital life as a female. “Some surgery is needed to remove the male organ and make Anand a complete woman. We are ready to do the surgery for free at our hospital,” Kalidas said. “But the trauma and social stigma have taken a toll on Anand. He has fallen unconscious several times due to stress. “When told about his gender on Thursday, he refused to eat and rejected treatment. Anjamma and Anand have left the hospital and gone back to their village,” he said.

Wow. What a bizarre story. Anyone remember the one about the boy who was raised as a girl because his doctor accidentally cut off an important bit when he was a baby?

This actually happens more frequently than you think. The patient usually realizes at some point that they have more male characteristics than female, despite hormone therapy. Pretty extreme stuff.
A while back a bunch of my friends discovered an article in Teen People (or some such mag, there may not even be one called that. Whatever teen girls read. Anyways...) in which a guy we had all known a few years back was interviewed because he was a transvestite and was going to have a sex change. Scarred us all for life. He mentioned in the interview how all of his old friends had teased him and called him gay, which was odd, cause none of us had suspected a thing, and wouldn't have teased him even if we had. I seriously hope I never run into her.
