Okay, here's the scenario. I hope this makes sense. I've got a 100' recan of 16mm color negative film that was loaded on a core, and I am going to be shooting on my bolex, which does not have a core adaptor. This means I would either have to get an adaptor for my camera, or somehow get the film onto a daylight spool. Is there any way to get the film onto a daylight spool or do I have to shell out 70 bucks for a little piece of plastic? Not that I'm a cheapskate and don't want to buy an adaptor eventually, but I'm just curious as to whether there is a better short-term solution. Thanks!

So long as you've got double perf film it'll work to go into a dark bag and wind the film onto a daylight spool (With single perf, you'll have to roll it onto something else and back again). Do it somewhat slowly, though, as any static discharge can cause fog.

I haven't worked with a Bolex in a while, but it may be that unless you have a magazine, a core+adapter with 100' of film may be too fat to load in anyway. I seem to remember daylight spools pretty much filling all the available space in the camera.

Hm...yeah, daylight spools do fill most of the space in the camera, I didn't think of that...well, I'm pretty sure the film is double perf so I should be able to get it onto a spool. Thanks for your help.

For Kodak at least, there should be a designation on the label of either 1R or 2R indicating single or double perf. I believe it is listed beneath the little 'Peel Here' arrow on the left but above the emulsion number (72xx-xxxx-xxxx). It may be part of a larger string of numbers (2R-2994 etc. indicating pitch etc.).

I believe the 1R and 2R designations are the SMPTE perf standards, so they may use the same code on Fuji, Ilford and other film brands labels as well if that's what you got.

Or, you can just feel the film when you're in the darkbag.

Oops! You said you have a re-can. You probably won't have a label telling you perf information then. Easy to figure out once you're in the bag, though.

bolex's can do double or single perf. you can just snip a bit off the end, keep it in the same direction, and then look at the little snips to see where the perfs are, in case you aren't sure.

we shift film from cores to spools all the time, it's just a slow process. we do it in a changing tent.
