Yes, LOTR special features have helped me understand what goes on behind teh camera more then anything I've ever watched. I think a lot of times they use plaster. If I'm right, that's a little sturdier and gives actors something to grab. Again, that's what I think happens. I know for statues and the such they get big foam blocks and carve 'em, then paint them to look like stone.
