Hello there, just joined the group and how to give and receive great advice in film making!

I will start off by asking a question that has puzzled me for ages now...

In some films, they require fake moutain faces and rock walls of such, and they use some kind of crafting material. I'm not too sure how its applied, I think they apply it and then shape it after its dry or something? Can anyone give me some info of what this material is?

I'd like to use it to create quarry style of walls for a film I'm doing...

Hey man. Welcome to the boards! They show how to do things in the Lord of the rings extended edition. I believe they use like aluminum foil and just crumbled it up, then painted it. It talks about the sets and how they built it often. Check it out

in most cases I believe they use large blocks of foam and just carve it. You can do this with styrofoam, but its a little chunky (and very messy). For a short film I helped a friend with he use chicken wire and paper mache to create a series of hills and mountains, but this was on a very small scale. I dunno how well that would work on a large set.

Yes, LOTR special features have helped me understand what goes on behind teh camera more then anything I've ever watched.

I think a lot of times they use plaster. If I'm right, that's a little sturdier and gives actors something to grab. Again, that's what I think happens.

I know for statues and the such they get big foam blocks and carve 'em, then paint them to look like stone.

I am a Thespian at the local highschool. We use many different things for our sets. Usually, we use old wood and this canvas like material for the walls. We can add to that by making textures to it and get the floor trims and even staircases and windows.
