Okay I'm writing this awesome script for an awesome short film. I'm estimating the length to be around 9-10 minutes. It's based on this short story i read recently in english class, where this guy is paralyzed from the neck down, but he escapes reality by pretending he can swim and fly. It's really good, however I found out today while looking at Darkhorizons.com, there is a foreign film coming out that seems similar. Should I continue with this production, or cut it off?

I'd still write it. The worst that can happen is people will think you got inspiration from the foreign film. IF its good thats a compliment, if it turns out to be a bad movie then yours will be better and people will carry you through the streers chanting your name. that miniseries about alien abduction was called taken. I think spielberg produced it or something. But i just realized thats not the name of your movie, your talking about the idea being taken, so nevermind

Does it really matter if someone else has alread done it or is going to do it?

How many statues of David are there by famous sculptors? how many Last Suppers? How many Expulsions from Eden?

How many photos of the NY skyline? of the Golden Gate Bridge? of the Joshua Tree?

Painters and photographers don't feel ashamed for revisiting the same things over and over again. you shouldn't either.

this is true enough, but you must remember people rip on a lot of people on this site for doing a film that was "like" some movie in theaters. But I do see what you're saying and I have decided to film it after schools out.

That is along with "The Door", "Night of Dysfunction and Disillusionment", "Souls We Cry", and "Life after Tomorrow" geez
does anyone need a writer cuz I am full of ideas

Seeing the movie may be a bad idea until your entire script is read. I've had great ideas which have turned into blatant rip-offs because my sub-concious was regurgitating a film I saw.
I'd complete the script/storyboard/idea/whatever before you see the foriegn film.

You said it was based on a short story you read in English. So whether this foreign film is similar or not, its still not totally orignial anway is it?
Anyway, I'd say go for it.

Oh, how I envy you. My mind appears to be blank for some reason so I'm just making a hell of a lot of crap. Anyway, it'll come good.

As long as you do it with a degree of style and put your old signiture on the film, it should be fine. It reminds me of a short film I read about last year, about a man talking of his dreams and ambitions as a runner. In the end it is revealed he's in a wheelchair, so it's by no means a completely original idea anyway.
