Right now I'm toying with a really rough movie idea and am about to wright a rough draft script.
The movie is about a post-apocylptic war...war. Like it'd be WW1 style fighting all over again amongst the survivors in what is left of the cities...after WW3.
Anyway I happen to have the resources to possibly make this seem...half-way as epic as I can, save for a severe lack of xtras, but I can get around to that later. And I've got plenty of shooting techniques that I've thought of for a movie like this that I'm eager to try, but one little question remains:
What would be your preferred level of gore and violence in a gritty movie like this?
I was thinking somewhere around the SAVING PRIVATE RYAN level. But I don't know. What would you consider? I'd like it as bloody and violently real as possible, but it could ruin the whole mood and get a little too excess...like any Dario Argento movie. But I don't want something horridly...clean, either. What do you think?

A little floor spice makes everything nice...

It would really depend on how much capabilities you have as far as Blood and Gore FX. If you can create such things convincingly, go for as violent as you want. If you are limited by such things there are creative ways around it, such as shaky camerawork to create the realistic feel, and hide squib effects that may not look great on a regular shot. I did this on one of my shorts and it turned out pretty good since you saw someone get shot and there was no clear shot of it. Hope that helps. Good Luck!

like laudy said, go all out if you can make it look convincing. there's too many non-bloody war movies already. i hate bloodless bullet hits in movies. it just makes everything seem fake. so, go for the blood, go for the gore.

Yea, thanks. As far as camera work goes I was going to go real shaky cam, and add some filters and get the lighting right to make it seem real dark and grainy, kinda like the aformentioned SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. I'm glad I can get some good support, cause a lot of people want me to make this PG-13 style, which to me is stupid. I think there shouldn't be any ratings other than PG and UNRATED, in my opinion. But anyway, gonna use plenty of squibs and gore, but the main effects aren't going to be in the gun fighting, it'll be in some real brutal melee stuff. Gonna invest some time into making squibs and good blood packs.
