Well, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I need to write a one page synopsis about a film I am passionate about making, for my application to The Vancouver Film School.

Usually I am full of great ideas, but now that I'm actually trying to think about it, I have none =(

I've been thinking about and writing down ideas for the past month but I don't find any to be of good enough quality to base my film school application on!

So, I'm basically hoping that maybe a little discussion could spark my imagination a little...

I've always wanted to make a movie like 'Bruce Campbell vs The Army of Darkness' but that's probably not a very mature/logical idea to use for my application. I've also always been very interested in mythology of all kinds.

Please help =l

first of all...i highly doubt that VFS will turn you down if your idea is average...they start a new class every 6 weeks or something, and probably aren't overly selective.

Here is my problem:
If you don't think you have any ideas which are good enough to actually make a film about...why even bother? There is nothing worse than the person who insists on talking when they have nothing worth saying.

why do you want to make films?

The filmmaker is suppose to have all the ideas. It is your responsibility to think up a story and not go on the internet asking for ideas. If you don't have any good ideas now, how it is going to be when you're all on your own trying to make it big? Part of a director's job is to be creative and that includes making a story work. In conclusion, I won't be giving you any ideas. You need to be prepared for the future and by giving you some good ideas, that won't help in the long run. Good luck thinking of something.

Honestly, as long as you can vividly communicate your passion and enthusiasm for telling a certain story, I really don't think VFS is that concerned with how brilliant or unique the details of whatever story you choose. They just want to make sure that there is a fire for storytelling inside you.

Im sure there have been times when you thought to yourself, "Whoa. That would make an AWESOME story/sequence/scene/whatever" only to realize that there would be no way to make that story come to life with your current budget. So I would try to brainstorm to remember or resurrect those kind of stories that got pushed aside due to whatever physical limitations.

You really can't force ideas by thinking about them. You just have to let them come naturally. Try reading the newspaper or a magazine and see if anything catches your eye or inspires you.

I recommend that you go live a little. Travel to a foreign country, experience life. Nobody on studentfilms.com is going to spark your creativity.

If you don't have any ideas, and are just looking to make a film based on another film you saw, you may as well just go and study film theory or something.

Alright, lets ease off on the negativity a bit Wink

Obviously we are here to help you in whatever way, but that initial brainstorming phase is a very individual process and its very difficult for someone else to help you in that area.

If nothing else I don't see any problem with writing your essay on a particular book that you would love to adapt into a movie. I think that works just as well. I'd give that a thought if you are having a little issue with writer's block
