Hey, I've shot short little things in a car before and they came out decent, but with the currently screenplay im workin on the entire Picture takes place in a car!!! There are three characters... one in the back seat and two up front. My question is really how should i set it up so i can have the car moving and shoot diffrent angels without screwing up the continuety? i got a few ideas of how i wanna shoot but if anyone has any suggestions to help i would really appreciate it!!! thanks!

Dare to be diffrent... dont give in to the "norm"

Do a lot of CU's so you can't really tell that the "drive by" background is constantly changin...or film at night where it's harder to tell...just a suggestion.

Just make sure the focus of our attention is not the backround when it shouldn't be, and wherever you are filming, (as in part of town) make sure everything kinda looks the same. Also, the backround that is visable when shot A is taken shouldn't be from the same direction as shot B.

Whatever you do, dude...don't use the song "Here in My Car" by Gary Numan. It would be suc a cliche.

I agree with all comments so far.
Maybe some shots from the dahboard, i really have no idea, anything that you think is original.
Do plan on using a green screen or what?

In my experience, you could pretty much drive a car around the same block, and no one will notice. If they do, then the story isnt keeping their attention anyway.

The obvious choices are the interior stuff. You can shoot fro the passenger seat, the back seat. You can get reflections in mirriors, low angles, high angles, whatever.

Now, in most films, they rig a camera just outside the cars side windows. This is a litle more difficult on our level, but it has been done. I figure if there are tips fr this, you could find them at www.rondexter.com

You could rent a trailer, drive the car up o it, and save enough space on the side for a tripod and camera, but you would need a big trailer.

One thing you probablly can pull off, is a rig on the hood. PLace the camera, on the hood, where you can see both actors (or all three, what have you) Then, put some pilows underneath it, to limit vibration, and get ALOT of gaffers tape. Pop the hood, and run tape around the camera, and under the hood. Make sure the camera wont fall off. (It would suck to run over the cam) Just another option. Good luck man.

I've seen this done in a student film before where they shoot the car scenes with all the windows masked with green screen. Of course, your lighting has to be perfect, and you have to have a good keying program. Then, drive around town and shoot background footage for every angle. If done well then nobody will notice. Of course, in the film I saw, it wasn't done well... so I did notice. That's how I learned the procedure, in fact.

It wouldn't turn out like the background they do for meteorologists on the news would it?

I especially watched for continuity errors in the film "Forlorn" (on this site). I couldn't find any, even though the background was very clearly visible.

If you still need some advice you could always ask that director.....

Dunno what your plot is, but we all assume the car is driving, what if it isn't for a scene? Hmm, also throw in a stop light or stop sign or something, cause I've seen driving scenes where they don't seem to stop and you wouldn't notice unless you're looking for it.

No, it was a feature-length student film called "Never Among Friends" made by a kid who graduated from my high school.
