Everybody says that you have to write at least 2 or 3 scripts before you can write one good enough to sell, maybe thats correct if you have an attitude like you do, but i certainly don't see it that way. Go ahead and shoot for failure if thats what you want, but i don't think it gives you the right to criticize what I want.
1) It's disgusting because: A) It's sad that most likely you're going to be wrong and will be let down B) It's insulting to those here who have written scripts and not gotten them out in theatres to suggest you're better. 2) If that's you're only motivation, that's sad. Even if no one ever saw you movie, you should still get something amazing out of it. And, even if it doesn't get out in theatres, you should be proud to hold the finish thing, show it to friend, and say "I wrote a feature script" or "I made a feature movie." 3) You shouldn't want to fail. You should hope with everything you have that you succeed (while realizing you might not.)
I agree with parts two and three. As far as the first go's... Well, I find that constructive criticism is most affective when it's actually constructive. Yor attitude is your own and if I were in anyway insulted by it, that would be no fault of yours. By the way, I am not insulted. If your optimism is misplaced and things don't go as well as you planned I will be the first to tell you to try again, and to keep up the sunny attitude. Discipline is key. If you are determined to be optomistic and confident even the greatest loss will be a stunning victory. You have only failed when you no longer care to try.

I think The Emperor's New Clothes story would have been different if the Emperor refused to believe he wasn't wearing any clothes even though he truly wasn't--oh wait, that's how the story actually goes. Blind optimism just makes it more likely that you'll run into a wall.

I've already written about 35 pages or so and it seems to be coming along really well. The only problem i'm having is I have trouble describing character expressions. For example Theres a scene where somebody gets killed, and a guy thats in on it has a look in his eyes like "what have i done?" but I just can't easily describe it. I've read scripts where the screenwriters can make it look simple. But I just have no idea what to put most of the time, the only expressions i can seem to come up with are simple grade 2 things like "Excited" or "Angry". Is there any sites that could help more or does anyone have any advice? Thanks
1. I think it is only a good thing that you have confidence in what youre doing, because that can perform as your best weapon, when selling your film. If you dind`t believe yourself in your screenplay no-one other will also. 2. 35 pages is a good start, but a normal feature film is about 120 pages. I wouldn`t say that I have masterpiece on my hands after finishing only 35 pages of my screenplay. 3.I would recommend you to watch, how people react to failures and shocks. What would you yourself do in the situation like you have killed a friend close to you? Look at the same time when answering that question into the mirror and catch your expressions and put them into words. Then do the same, now through your charakter`s eyes. What would he do now? Would he laugh at himself or start to yelling being so stupid. Let your character show his feelings through his eyes. That`s good screenwriting. Reaction also depends on your charakter`s personality. If he is a tough guy, he doesn`t in the first place start to cry.

Spot on. Those who believe that they will fail, regardless of skill or luck, always do. | PerryKroll.com | TRC | "If not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled." Wodehouse
