ok for my class i have to come up with a 5 to 7 min short film idea for a 16mm black and white film to be shot on a bolex.
i have been having writers block latley and was wondering if anyone has a silent, cool, dark themed or abstract idea for a short film. you will get full credit ofcourse.

i like something in the mood of David Lynch or stanley kubrick

in youtube.com you have plenty of lynch´s early work. Music is very important. Add some strange sounds like in the brilliant eraserhead.

The classic 'silent film' subjects:

guy trying to get girl to notice him
the horror of the self

Here's one story:

HAPPYNESS, OR A WARM GUN?

FADE IN:

A guy falls for a girl who happens to be a hired assasin, with him on her hit list. She's been hired by the guy's arch nemesis who has a thing for the girl.

They have a fling, and everything goes as planned, until he falls asleep and she can't bring herself to kill him, because she's falling for him too.

She stalls her hirer until he's had enough and goes to kill the guy himself.

She saves the guy's life, by using her hirer's crush on her as a way to get close to him so she can slice his throat with a bucknife.

She turns to embrace the guy, but he has the gun pointed at her, scared ****less.

She takes a step toward him, arms wide open.

He loves her, but he doesn't know what to do.

He pulls the trigger. She falls. The knife clatters to the floor.

FADE OUT.

If you like it, I can pen the script too.

GODFATHER-"sounds too much like a student film, i want something that diversese away from that"

True, it does sound like a student film, but that's what you're making, something that's five to seven minutes long. You can only achieve so much in that length of time.

The concepts you're thinking about (in terms of being wildly different) would be perfect for something feature length. But, from my experience makin a student film, I found you can only fit so much into that amount of time.

Just my thought, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there is a way to do that.

Any thoughts?

you do have a valid point, there is so much time, but that doesnt mean be a cliche.
you can still be creative and make something strong with in the time limit.
something new,
