Why dont you build a mockup set? It couldn't be that incredibly hard. And with any following shots of people going inside it, use a real elevator, and base your set off of that one.

I don't know how difficult it would be to do this, but if you need a TV in the elevator, just disarm that elevator shaft and keep the door open so you can use an extension cord toe nearest outlet. As long as you don't show that the elevator door is open, people won't know.

Yeah. I did a scene in an elevator. Sound was our biggest problem (it echoed, and played classical music.)

Anyway, just keep the door open, and film from the outside. You may find you need to do that to get the camera far enough away, anyway. Most camcorders don't have a very wide lens.

You could, if you're editing on Final Cut Pro or something like it, put an unplugged TV in the elevator and then place the video you want over the screen in post.

actually, Noirboy's idea sounds more practical, no cords for the TV needed, and you get quality control over the image you superimpose on the TV (assuming you can do it with the software you have).

As far as your lighting situation goes, buy one (or two) of those cordless, battery operated 1 million candlewatt spotlights at Walmart and diffuse them. They're only about $20-$30. And assuming that the elevator is primarily lit by fluorescent (sp?) lights (which most are), you might want to think about putting a warm gel over them to get rid of the green fluros emit. Make sure you don't shoot at a higher shutter speed than 1/60th of a second. Good luck.

i had considered using an unplugged tv and fittting another clip inside its frame in post but i am worried because the elevator is fairly dark and since there wouldnt actually be any light emmiting from the unplugged tv it might look very unatural????
i dont know, thanks a lot for everyones suggestions i appreciate it
