alright, i know this is a fairly stupid question, but, how do you guys go about writing a screen play? do you make characters, then a story, then the dialog? or do you start with a core concept, then develope characters off the concept, fill in the details, and write the dialog? i'd like to try and write a script, but when i went to try, i realized i had absolutly NO idea where to start hahah.

thanks guys = ]

I try to make it as simple as possible. Like if I was doing a movie about a cop chasing a robber I would start with: Cop tried to catch robber, then just build from there.

Shakespeare says "Prose before hoes."

Start with the ending, track backwards only as much as necessary to establish the story, then sketch in characters. I like to start with a general outline and make it more specific - I usually do 3-4 iterations until it has every shot in detail. I could go beyond that and try to direct every frame, but you have to accept some intrusion from chance and reality Wink

Everyone writes differently. That being said I try to think of a complete concept. Something that feels right and something I can sum up into a paragraph. Then I think about the major plot points and think about how I will expand them. Then I write the dialogue.

For short literary fiction I just write, even if i dont know where I'm going. I just see what comes out then I edit it or change it.

There is no right way to write a screenplay. A great story comes in many forms,...its how you work best with creating a rich story,...you should experiment,....sit down with a pencil and paper and just write what ever comes, maybe its a strong character or maybe its the first setting of a scene, or a storyline, or a genre, (comedy...horror...etc.) your creative instincts will kick in and before you know it you will have a cinematic story a-brewing. (editing note): (Make sure to re-read and make sure things make sense and your message is properly conveyed with good diologe chocies.) You can only go foward from a blank page!!!
