Well, I remember the past summer, in preparation for filming a short, my friend and I went around my home town posting flyers (coffee shops, music stores, etc.). I wouldn't reccomend doing this, even though you might get a few good auditions. Most of the people, Ive concluded, just like to tear off the little tab things. And then you go and see the flyer and theres only like one tab left out of 10, and you get all excited, and then notice the trash can underneath the bulliten board. There are those 9 tabs, laying in the can, crushing your hopes and dreams.
But, what did really help was going around to all and any local dance studios, amateur acting theaters, etc. I usually talked to whoever was in charge (or whoever they passed me off to), and gave them 4 or 5 copies of my flyer (again with the little rip-off tab things). They (most) were more than happy to not just hang the sheets up, but make announcements to all the members as well.
The response I got was great; I set aside a whole day for auditions. And amongst everyone I found some pretty decent actors.
Hoped this helped
