this may or may not be a stupid question.... but say i have a canon camera and a panasonic editing machine....would the two be compatable? or would even really need an editing machine with all the software out there that i can just use on my computer?

The two should work (as in, a tape shot in a Canon, should work in a Panosonic machine) but I assume your speaking of a linear editing device, which, yeah, would be kind of counter productive considering all the editing software out there. Its kinda like rubbing two sticks togthere, when you have matches in your pocket. I would recommend a computer editing program, many out there to choose from. And never be afraid to ask. You cant learn if no one tells ya. R. Michael
Non-linear editing is generally defined as editing done with the use of a hard drive allowing you to move to diffrent clips without having to wait. its called non linear because you don't work in a straight line, you can go anywhere. Linear editing is the use of tapes or analog, called linear because you have to stay on a line of tape.
And no questions are stupid if the answers can help you.
