Wide angle lenses help reduce jitters caused by steadicams and handheld shots. The jitters are smaller, because more is in the field of view, and so they are much less obvious. Also, wide angle lenses are great closeup to someone's face for comic effect, or down low looking up at people to make them seem large and powerful.
