Whenever I look at most of the "good" movies (award winners and such), it's always for realistic dramas. Or musicals.

That's what it seems like to me, anyway. So here's my question:
Do people even like unrealistic movies?
I know Simon Pegg can get away with decent unrealism, but that's because of A.) it's comedy, and B.) cinematography rocks.
But other than that. Movies like "There Will Be Blood" and "Michael Clayton" are being nominated for all the stuffs.

I enjoy solid unbelievability. "V for Vendetta" is one of the better movies in history as far as i'm concerned, but the plot is very far out there.

So, i'm asking, finally, would the following be enjoyable to you guys (or anyone) at all? (and please, don't steal):

- Futuristic war where a book in a dead language is discovered that tells of the actual battles before they happen, describing in detail the attacks.

- (comedyfarce) Plants in general turn homicidal for both global warming and vegetarianism.

- Group of friends/roommates/fraternity is stuck in an experimental "House of Portals." They eventually must escape and exact revenge on the masterminds, just because it's so freakin' annoying.
(this is actually a friends idea, but he let me have it)

I mean, do these appeal to anyone but me?

clockwork orange
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
sin city
Lord of the rings

these are great movies which hardly resemble real life, and there are tons more.

to answer your post:

your first pitch already seems a hard sell for me. A "cool" idea, but i can already see some kind of highly mediocre ending involving time travel, or ending the same way Planet of the Apes does.... in my eyes, this is an interesting idea, but in the end, it is a hard one to make a good film out of.

idea #2 reminds me of Little Shop of Horrors.... so to mee it seems like it's been done already.

#3cseems like the best idea, but i have trouble coming up with a reasonable justification for there being a house of portals in the world for any reason....

I really fail to see any meaningful human story happening as a result of any of these films...A film is not about its premise, but about what it says to people, and how it affects them.

i think you need to think of how a personal and meaningful story fits into the context of a unrealistic universe...the sixth sense, for example, is not about "what would happen if there was a doctor who had a patient who saw dead people, but it was for real." It is about two people who can't communicate with their closest loved ones...but once they reach out and trust eachother, they help eachother fix their problems with communicating ( i hope nobody thinks this is too oversimplified)...in any case, the sixth sense is not good because of its premise, but because of the emotional journey it takes the viewer on.

i am really sorry if i come off as some douche who is bashing your films, but i can honestly say that i doubt that these would be of interest to me, and the only people i know who might like them are the people in my school who rave about how "awesome Jumper is!"

I have to agree with Evan, I really don't see any of those being turned into really great stories. I think that stories have to be based in some sort of reality. It doesn't have to be ours, but it has to be a believable and complete reality. There has to be something there for us to relate to so that we connect to the movie. That human connection is what is going to make an idea go from the last terrible student film to an actually good short.

To me, the concern is not so much the set up but what I'm supposed to care about. Why should I care that there's a futuristic war and a book that details it? Where's the drama to keep me watching?

maybe you could combine the last two. Like have it be from the point of view of plants, like greenhouses are houses o' portals, and then they exact revenge by killing the "masterminds," which would be humans. I don't think it's a good idea, but um...I don't know, it might be like a Pixar on acid indie thing. I don't know what i'm saying.

And this is why i posted this, to see what you guys think.

I was thinking that in the end of the first one, the book of predictions would turn out to be a copy of "True Stories of WWII" or something, thus revealing that history repeats itself because of humanity's selfishness and such... but that's just stretchin' it.

The second two were gonna be more along the comedy lines. And absurdist comedy at that. To me, "The Holy Grail" was one of the better comedies i've seen, but it has no story of human connection... just french people...

Thanx for your opinions, guys, and once again, this is why i posted this: to see what you think.
