If you have the money to get a shotgun mic and a boom, you will definatly get a better audio quality and it will allow you to expand your audio abilities while shooting... However getting a good quality mic can be expensive... If you don't have the money to spend then you in-camera audio will be fine, but an external mic should in most cases provide you with better audio

I have a GL-2 as well. What I've found to work best is an Azden SGM-2X shotgun microphone for about 200 bucks. If your budget is less, you can easily go with one of those Audio Technics mics on ebay for about 60. Either way, you're going to need a boom pole to suspend the mic above your talent, and for that I direct you to: The Really Cheap But Extremely Effective Mic Boom Pole TutorialWorks perfectly for my needs. Despite the quality of the Gl-2 there's definately tape motor noise on the onboard mics.
