I need advice on how to think of a main idea for a movie. I can easily write movies from an idea but, for me the challenge is thinking of an original idea to start off with. I'm not asking you for an idea, I'm just asking for advice.

ive found the best way is too ask questions....

now take the answer to the question youve answered and substitute it with something else....something harder to believe....

this works especially well with sci-fi i think...

or take experiences and exaggerate or expand upon them... this works well with comedies

i.e waiting..., superbad,

or create the charecter you always wanted to create and build a story around him...

thats just my lil advice....

or take small elements of some of your favorite movies and create something new....

i.e the matrix, and anything by tarintino...

when i feel like this i take some time off from thinking. usually the best ideas are just a spark, it hits you, when your not thinking about making a movie at all. just relax and let it come to you. listen to the world around you more. write anything you hear or see down. something is bound to happen
