One thing that's helped me write stories in my creative writing class is to create a character first. You could come up with all this funky stuff about a character. Maybe he or she has a wierd physical trait or something different about their personality that you don't see too often. Once you know your character a little better you can put him or her in random situations that could turn out to be a good story. Also, try describing a setting. Use something local or familiar but add things to it. Sometimes ideas will just come out from these little exercises. Just remember to add some kind of conflict. Good luck. It's given me some ideas lately.

have four friends one of them a star athlete then have one be a lady's man another a stoner and a regular guy the narrator then have them one night at a party and the stoner and the jock get into the car and the pull out and get hit by an oncoming truck the football player loses his football scholarship to that ivy league school because of an unrepairable spine injury and the stoner dies then end it with them all around 40 seeing each other at least three of the four. thats about it like my run on sentence.

I wouldn't say no horror. It can be a really good genre to practice different camera moves, lighting, and pacing. And if you can make a horror film that actually scares people, it's quite satisfying. It's a lot harder than it sounds.

Like Kyle said, you are a movie and life is a movie. Wrap your mind around storytelling, keep a notebook on hand, and write down anything and everything that sparks even an once of curiosity or interest.

You know those books with writing prompts that barely help and frustrate you even more during times of the inevitable 'block'? Well a notebook of your ideas is like one of those but full of prompts that are within your range of thinking, within your interest.
