Well, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I need to write a one page synopsis about a film I am passionate about making, for my application to The Vancouver Film School.

Usually I am full of great ideas, but now that I'm actually trying to think about it, I have none =(

I've been thinking about and writing down ideas for the past month but I don't find any to be of good enough quality to base my film school application on!

So, I'm basically hoping that maybe a little discussion could spark my imagination a little...

I've always wanted to make a movie like 'Bruce Campbell vs The Army of Darkness' but that's probably not a very mature/logical idea to use for my application. I've also always been very interested in mythology of all kinds.

Please help =l

first of all...i highly doubt that VFS will turn you down if your idea is average...they start a new class every 6 weeks or something, and probably aren't overly selective.

Here is my problem:
If you don't think you have any ideas which are good enough to actually make a film about...why even bother? There is nothing worse than the person who insists on talking when they have nothing worth saying.

why do you want to make films?

The filmmaker is suppose to have all the ideas. It is your responsibility to think up a story and not go on the internet asking for ideas. If you don't have any good ideas now, how it is going to be when you're all on your own trying to make it big? Part of a director's job is to be creative and that includes making a story work. In conclusion, I won't be giving you any ideas. You need to be prepared for the future and by giving you some good ideas, that won't help in the long run. Good luck thinking of something.

Honestly, as long as you can vividly communicate your passion and enthusiasm for telling a certain story, I really don't think VFS is that concerned with how brilliant or unique the details of whatever story you choose. They just want to make sure that there is a fire for storytelling inside you.

Im sure there have been times when you thought to yourself, "Whoa. That would make an AWESOME story/sequence/scene/whatever" only to realize that there would be no way to make that story come to life with your current budget. So I would try to brainstorm to remember or resurrect those kind of stories that got pushed aside due to whatever physical limitations.

You really can't force ideas by thinking about them. You just have to let them come naturally. Try reading the newspaper or a magazine and see if anything catches your eye or inspires you.

Alright, lets ease off on the negativity a bit Wink

Obviously we are here to help you in whatever way, but that initial brainstorming phase is a very individual process and its very difficult for someone else to help you in that area.

If nothing else I don't see any problem with writing your essay on a particular book that you would love to adapt into a movie. I think that works just as well. I'd give that a thought if you are having a little issue with writer's block

In a way I do agree with linsper23 on his advice with the Director's responsibility... but I can understand your predicament. Under pressure, one's mind doesn't function as it would without NEED for ideas. Don't need the ideas, want them and they'll come. If you're really passionate about a mythology-based film, I would suggest something in Christian mythology... it is hardly ever tapped into, and for me, it would most certainly make an interesting film.

Good luck getting into The Vancouver Film School!

Don't let the negative folks here get you down. If they were hot-shizz writers and directors they wouldn't have time to post the BS I just read.

First of all calm down think of the movies you like and inspire you, then like Shakespear just rip them off. They need to invent an "Irony Font".

Or go to http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/ and use the story generator I took a spin and got: In a world where cats are currency, a talking blanket joins a group of undercover magicians. Now that's hot!

Ok so don't steal, stealings bad, but honestly just calm down and get the synopsis done, it dosn't have to be Citizen Kane, have some confidence. Just don't write a synopsis where a Kid has to write a synopsis and has writers block.

As a goof you should submit the star wars synopsis and see if they even notice.

Go to Robert Graves for Mythology and of course Joseph Campbell. Then give them yer own spin.
Newspaper/Broadcast cable news is always good.
Fox News is best. They are so misinformed it's comical. They said that the Tuskeegee Experiment lasted only a couple of years and its not as if they didn't want to give out pennicillin, it just hadn't been invented yet. HMMM. 1972 its uncovered and no pennicillin? HMMM Can you please address why you would give human beings active tertiary syphllis in the first place please. Go figure. Newsbroadcasters nice work if you can get it.
Also in NY there was a security camera that captured a lady dying in a hospital emergency room while people sat and watched without helping at all. nurses actually step over her. people in the waiting room are reading newspapers and watching TV as this lady is dying and her husband is screaming for help....Nice! Welcome to NY, now go home.

Just breathe, buddy. Seriously.
It'll come and be sure to check back in when it does
