For my project "Silence" I researched actual Soviet re-entry disasters and confirmed that you can briefly survive partial decompression without a helmet on.
For "Survival Record" I looked at contingency plans and educational videos from the height of Cold War paranoia.
For my current WWII film set in the Philippines I'm reading Onoda Hiroo's memoirs and looking at maps of Leyte island.
Of course that depends. For my upcoming WW2 short, I read tons of books (mainly Ambrose's) about WW2. I would have read them anyway, but it gave me a clear insight in how I should write and direct the film. Also I did a lot of research in our region, our liberation (Holland)... Won't even bother to tell you how much research I put in thinking how to create the weapons, all the VFX, etc. altogether it took up quite some time...
Also I've done scripts with no research. And of course the nature depends, from reading books, to reliable internet sources, other similar films/series (I've analysed and scrutinized Band of Brothers only far too often).
hope this helps

So far for my short films...not enough I'm afraid. I havent developed a story that existed in the same universe as this one and i didnt use any historical facts or figures.
I do however research on production and post production programs and skills and techniques. I don't know if that is the kind of research you were thinking of.
