Alright, I'm pretty sure im pulling the ultimate crime here. I'm adapting J.D. Salinger's The Catcher In The Rye. I don't intend to sell it or do anything with it; I'm just writing it to see the movie played out in my mind. The book itself is pretty remarkable. I've read it over eight times and everytime I cry at the end because a.) I'm a ***** who likes to cry and b.) the ending is so vivid that I just see this huge beautiful, operatic mix of things that it's just . . . wow. Anyway, I've basically wondered around in a circle and the entire reason I was posting this was to ask people if they've ever done what I'm doing, adapt a book without premission or intensions on doing anything with it, or if ya haven't what book would you be intrested in doing and why?

not to burst ur bubble or anything, but the Catcher in the Rye thing has been done before several times, the one guy I remember most was named Ricky D'ambrose (if my memory serves me correct). We had a big battle then (botu a year and a half ago or so) about respecting the rights of an author and copyright and whether any film could do justice to the book etc... just though tu should know

O, yes, and I would like to do an adaptation of my favorite book of fairy tales: "The Bible" Big Grin

I vaguely remember what you are talking about HDK. Yeah, i'm sure it's been done before. I really think it's pointless to spend all you effort on an idea that technically isn't yours (unless you've already obtained permission, because then you could make profit and send it to festivals), at this point I need to make films that I could legitimately send into festivals. As for your last question, I have a lot of short stories, and even a novel, that I would like to adapt, but I would prefer to keep them secret to avoid the possibility of others stealing them. Razz

kane, if you ever make "the bible" (old testament) you have to make it really trippy with lots of sex, violence and weird hallucinations.

if that day should ever come, I wanna commit the first murder. Smile

See I don't really care if its been done before because I'm still doing it. I'm writing the script the way I want the movie to be -- I'm not going to sell or anything else. I'm just doing it, I guess, for pleasure and excercise. I could be doing films, like you Trespasser. But to me, i need to have a story before I touch a camera. And I think that's why I'm working on practicing writing. I'd rather have one movie with a good story than 100 movies with crappy stories. Do you understand what I'm saying?

absolutely, I know what you're saying, a good story and a well written script is essential before even thinking about making a film. I operate the same way, I just try to avoid legal complications and copywritten material so I can get the most out of my work: pleasure, experience, and potential for winning something.
