I am considering adapting a short story that was published in 1932 into a short film. Do I need to get any permission to do this?

What if I don't want to make any money off of the short...just to do it for practice?

I'm sure that this has been addressed a million times...but I couldn't find anything regarding really old published/copyrighted materials.

It shouldn't be a problem. Maybe if you try to submit it to a film festival it will be an issue, but I doubt it.

Besides, the length of a copyright for most works is about 60-70 years after the death of the author. After that the story/book is public domain. I think you will be safe.

I'm also busy on a short film based on a short story, but the story is not that old. I heard the same thing that 'braininabox' said from someone else. I contacted the author and his happy with me making a film from his book. They mostly dont know its comming they're way...

Do you think it matters that it's a Hemingway short?
